Stoic Somnus 15
A 2013 model, side zip, 15 degree bag with 850 down fill and a Pertex Quantum shell. Recommended for people looking for a 2 pound, winter/fall/spring bag with the features and performance of a high end bag without the high end cost.
Pros
- Light weight
- Compressability
- Good value for features offered
Cons
- No draft tube
- Foot zipper snags easier than side zipper
This review is for the 2013 long model, which has a side zipper, vs the top zipper of previous models. The bag features 850 fill down with very lightweight Pertex Quantum shell material. It ships with a compression sack and a cotton storage sack.
This material feels like silk, and helps the bag compress down to about 9x12. It could probably be compressed more if needed, but that is as far as the Stoic compression sack goes. Weighs just a bit over 2 pounds with stuff sack. The bag has a zipper in the footbox area for ventilation as needed.
I've been very happy with the bag, the temperature rating seems spot on. At 30 degrees, I was sleeping well with only a baselayer. As a cold sleeper, I plan to use this bag in the fall and spring, and with some more layers, in the winter.
At $230 from Backcountry, it is a great value with all of the features and benefits of comparable, more expensive bags. Stoic is Backcountry's house brand and backed by a lifetime warranty. I would like to see a separate draft tube at the top of the bag, however the pillow pocket in the hood is a nice addition.
Lastly, I've gotten the bag wet with condensation, and the shell was able to keep the down dry with this amount of moisture.
