Beartooth Mountains, Montana

I'm want to take a group of 8-10 scouts for 10-12 day in Montana backpacking. I'v heard goodthing about the Beartooth Mountains. We want peace and solitude. This is an experienced group. They did the Winds in Wyoming last year without a problem

Suggestions? More initial trip ideas? thanks.

Re: Beartooth Mountains, Montana

The Beartooth Wilderness is certainly a beautiful area. It rivaled just about anywhere else I've been. It was infinately less crowded than Glacier, North Cascades, Tetons, and equally as beautiful. Solitude shouldn't be much of a problem. It's easy to get off the beaten path and lose the herd if need be. I've only hiked the trail towards Fossil Lake so my experience there is very limited. The trailhead took off at the East Rosebud lake trailhead, about 45 miles southwest of Columbus Montana. We hiked the trail to Fossil Lake and then headed back to E. Rosebud in four days. Fossil Lake was a little past the midway point between E. Rosebud & the Beartooth highway(not sure of the actual name, I'm winging it). I'm not sure if there's a ton of loop options along this route, but I'm sure you could work something out. It was a beautiful hike, and much less crowded than I anticipated for mid August. There is a "Hiking the Beartooth/Absoroka wilderness" book by Falcon Guides that describes this trip in detail. I know this ramble probably wasn't much help, but I can certainly attest to the beauty and solitude of the Beartooths. It would be a wise trip destination to say the least. Later man
