Where's Karl? Heading down the AT, fast

At 7:18 a.m. this morning, ultra-runner Karl Meltzer set off from the top of Mount Katahdin here in Maine on the biggest race of his life. His challenge: to run the entire length of the 2,174-mile Appalachian Trail in less than 47 days.

You can track Meltzer's progress online at whereskarl.com, courtesy of his SPOT messenger. And once he has some stats recorded, the obsessive types among us can learn things like his average running and resting heart rates each day, vertical, and calories burned.

Meltzer's expected to run 41 miles today. Take a guess at how long that will take, and if you're right you can win stuff in a weekly drawing.
