Wenger Eiger

rated 3 of 5 stars
photo: Wenger Eiger hiking boot

Decent boot, needs break-in time for the boot tongue, Vibram soles are awesome for scrambling up and down steep banks when trail blazing.

Pros

  • Good heel fit, no slipping
  • Fits a narrow foot OK, despite being a medium width boot
  • Vibram soles are superior

Cons

  • Break-in time for the tongue
  • High volume instep
  • Rubber toe rand, minor de-laminatiion at bend points

Good ankle fit and support, proven on the gopher-hole riddled upper Tejon Ranch trails. Good narrow heel fit, no slipping. Warm boot, just fine for mild weather hiking; will otherwise necessitate sweaty sock rotation for hot weather backpacking.

Thick leather upper seems fine for 35 pound pack loads, but make pulling the instep tight on a narrow foot unlikely. The boot tongue takes about 50 miles to break-in because of its thickness and shape; it pinches your upper instep until broken-in.

I am still amazed with the high-angle scrambling ability of the Vibram soles on this boot; going up or down slope the soles are truly awesome. Size is 11.5; slightly bigger than true fit size.

Narrow fitting boot but good overall construction.

Tried this boot while I was on the search for my perfect boot. I have narrow feet but my toes were still rubbing, not enough toe space for me.
