I bought these tights as well as the top for a week long winter backpacking trip. It was well worth the money, and I will be buying a spare set for keeping dry for wear after a long day's hike. Yes, the fit is a bit tight, but these are compression garments. The tighter the fit, the warmer you are in cold weather.
Also, I didn't find them itchy in the ankle/lower leg like I find with mid-weight long johns. They were slightly long on me, but I also ordered the large (after reading the other reviews). I just folded them a bit and was good to go (my hiking socks/boots did enough constricting on their own!).
* Gift: No
* Waist: Feels true to size
* Inseam: Feels true to length
* Gear Usage: Backpacking
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
