Thorlo Mountaineering Socks - Thick Cushion
After trying many makes and models of heavy hiking socks, these are the only ones I will now use for cold weather, be that for mountaineering, snowshoeing or as a work boot sock in the winter.
I have climbed for many days in these, using a thin liner sock, vapor barrier, these insulating socks, double plastic mountaineering boots, and neoprene overboots when the cold really hits (-40). Nothing else I have used is as warm, as durable, as comfortable and as effective at preventing blisters than these, while still not being so tight or voluminous in the boot that circulation is compromised.
Length goes up over the calf, so no cold spots or boot / gaiter chafing. When not using a VBL, they dry out reasonably quickly, too. I pack three pairs — two for alternating days of climbing and one for sleeping.
They last well, although I do pay attention to the care instructions (wash inside out and use fabric softener). I would recommend these without reservation.
