Sierra Designs Tiros Expedition

rated 4.0 of 5 stars

The Tiros Expedition has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best four-season tents for 2024.

This is the best tent I have ever owned, hands down. Sierra Designs' construction quality is second to none in my opinion. They have managed to improve upon the only complaint that I ever had about the Tiros 1, that being the small vestibule for an expedition tent. The Tiros Expedition's vestibule sports a support pole and is 11.75 square feet!

This thing is bomber. I was unbelievably impressed with the ease of setup, exactly the same as my Clip Flashlight (swiftclips). The clips are really easy to attach with heavy gloves on, and the dual clips at the pole junctions apparently increase the tents load capacity by 150%. It feels totally stable in very high winds and the dual tunnel vents in the fly are really handy.

I actually like putting the vestibule over the smaller rear door and using the main door as the entrance so you don't have to climb over packs and other gear. The small footprint (91x58) is ideal for those small spots.

Excellent tent overall.

Design: 4-season expedition

Ease of Setup: Extremely easy, less than 5 minutes
Weight: 7lbs, 12oz.

Repeated problems with leaking. The tent body replaced once.

Tent fly has continued to be a problem. The fly went back a second time after it was suggested initially that I reseal. I did. It leaked.

Back to Sierra. They added more seam seal to the interlock seams.

Off climbing and it rains. The tent still leaks. The water is coming in near the interlock connections somehow. What now?

I have an expedition tent that I would not take on a true expedition. My friends with a TNF Mountain 24 are amused. I am not.

Ease of Setup: Quick

This tent is a bombproof shelter. Perfect for extreme condition use. Weight is a bit on the heavy side, but the tautness of the design and the big vestibule makes up for it. I just wish that there was a slopping vestibule for the other entrance.

Just got back from the Titcomb Basin in the Winds... my Tiros perfomed like a dream. The new clip-loc design is said to make this tent even stronger. I plan to use this tent on Mt. Washington in January for our attemp on the Presidential traverse. We will have the Mountain Hardware Trango and TNF's VE-25 on the same trip. I'll update this review then... rds.

This tent is great. A lot of people complain about the use of four-season tents in the summer, but I have no problems.

I just took a trip to Red River Gorge in Kentucky where the temps were 50° at night 60 -70° during the day. I had no problems with the tent. There wasn't much condensation build up either.

However, I do recomend getting up before the sun rises and always seam seal the tent floor and fly!!!

Design: 4-season/mod. dome

Ease of Setup: Simple, less than 7 minutes
Weight: 8+?
