Sierra Designs Nomad 4
[Google Translate: Exceptional tent neither too big nor too small, superb comfort, super solid, which can be set up ultra-fast (3 ultra-robust poles of the same length) for the size, very versatile.]
Pros
- Robustesse [robustness]
- Rigidité [rigidity]
- Rapidité [speed]
- Exellente ventilation [excellent ventilation]
- portes très larges [very wide doors]
Cons
[Perfectible: Slightly deeper (84"- 86" instead of 79"), More head-shoulder room in the top of the front vestibule, slightly deeper rear vestibule tip, slightly taller ventilation side panels. It would be perfect!]
- Porte avant doublé tissus et moustiquaire [Front door lined with fabrics and mosquito net.]
Google Translate:
This is probably one of the Strongest and Fastest 4 Person/3 Season Tents possibly comparable to the fiercest 4 Season Expedition Tent Models, 3 ultra strong poles of exactly the same lengths (Once pitched and tight, I think it would support one person sleeping evenly on the structure!), quick assembly, 2 large practical 360 doors, excellent ventilation and even if a little tight to sleep 4 people (It has a lot of space, very spacious shape to move around indoors), it takes up little space on restricted lots for the 58 square feet offered; The walls of the flysheet each side Clip for more ventilation, the front door of the flysheet lifts up to make an awning or shelter (With 2 poles of the same height). I've had close to 10 models from Sierra Designs and more from other top tent brands and models. This is one of my favorite Top Level 5 stars; Well done Sierra!
This Nomad 4.2 was no longer made by Sierra Designs when I bought it. I purchased this tent used.
Pros: I am really impressed with this tent and its quality. Sierra Designs knows how to make quality tents and pack them with useful features. I have not seam sealed mine and there is apparently no reason to do so! I have been in some pretty hard rain and it holds up well. It has a nice clothesline and plenty of large side wall pockets inside the tent.
I consider it a wonderful base camp tent. It is a little bit of a low profile to be considered a "family tent". For a one or two person plus lots of gear tent, it is very nice!
The odd shape is a blessing and a curse at the same time. The odd shape allows for plenty of corners to tuck gear into but also this odd shape makes setting up slightly frustrating with poles and where they go. You have to look at the instructions every time you set this tent up and it can be a little tough on you to get the tent poles lined up properly in the tent corners.
Cons: I would consider this a no more than 3-person tent. Because of its odd shape (again a blessing and a curse) I see a very cramped quarters with 4 people.
Overall, if you find this tent in a used condition somewhere, it is a fantastic base camp tent. For some it would work well even as a car camping tent, but its low profile makes it more of a backcountry style tent. I use mine for a wilderness base camp tent while kayaking/camping on lakes.

My husband and I have used this tent six to seven times for car camping. Setup is quick and easy. It will fit two smaller camp cots (at a cost of reduced head room), or two large camp mats, or one queen-size inflatable mattress. We use it in Northwest Montana and often in Glacier Park.
Ventilation is good, weather protection is excellent. It doesn't require as much space as some base camping tents we've used, and its lower profile is better suited to occasional high winds in the St. Mary's area in Glacier Park. We've had another (very expensive) higher profile tent collapse under high winds, causing permanently bent tent poles.
We've been happy with this tent for car camping.
