Sea to Summit TPU Guide Accessory Case
Mostly waterproof and still fits into PFD pocket, but fiddly and pricey.
Pros
- Fully waterproof (IPx8)
- Attachment points
- Roll-up zip goes along long side, making for a compact package
Cons
- Do not rely on this alone—phone corners are a weak point
- Getting phone in and out takes some wrestling
- Overall rather expensive
I've had this phone case for 3 (?+) years, used while kayaking (carried usually in PFD pocket, so suffered the occasional full submersion, as well as getting banged around).
Nice workmanship and design (few [none?] other soft cases are certified beyond IPx7), and I particularly like the fact that the zip goes along the long side of the phone, and gets rolled up tightly against it. This makes for a compact package that can get stuffed into tight pockets.
Also, the choice of colours includes some nicely visible ones, so less chance of leaving the phone in a dark boot or on a beach. The attachment points are occasionally useful (clip to deck lines, with additional carabiner) and otherwise unobtrusive (fold away).
Some gripes prevent me giving a full 5-star:
I occasionally had water inside (I use this around an already "waterproof" phone, so no catastrophe), both apparently from the supposedly-closed zip, and from small holes that tend to develop over time (and which I've patched up with Urethane glue).
As such, would not rely purely on the case alone for something critical. These holes tend to develop on phone corners and edges (points of maximum stress for the material), and might be due to "abuse" rather than "use", but the design does indeed not protect these corners, and in particular does not have "spare" material there.
Getting phones in and out can be a bit of a wriggle. The clear PU will nicely stick to polished surfaces such as a phone touchscreen. Undoing the zip with cold wet fingers also can be a challenge (hint: teeth). And the Velcro that is supposed to secure the roll-top around the zip doesn't, in my experience...not a concern if this goes straight into a pocket, but will gently unroll if left on a deck.
And last but not least, this is quite expensive for a glorified plastic bag.
