Foldable titanium stove base - an incredibly useful addition to a legged Primus stove. Greatly improves stability on uneven surface, and especially on snow and sand. Makes cooking safer on dry/flammable surfaces.

Pros

  • Improves stove stability on uneven surface
  • Prevents sinking into snow or sand
  • Prevents fires and temperature damage under the stove
  • Foldable
  • Very lightweight at 55 g / 2 oz.

Cons

  • No stuff sack included
  • Not compact enough in folded state

I've been using several Primus multifuel stoves for many years. While the bottom heat shield (made of thick aluminum foil) is always included into the stove package, it's quite a bit weak and has limited lifespan. So I was interested in more substantial stove base since the beginning of time.

Cooking on wet footprint with rather unstable snow underneath

A few years ago Primus started producing a special stove base - StovePaw - for their 3-legged stoves. It's foldable and made of titanium (weight is 55 g / 2 oz.), so I couldn't resist this temptation!

By the time of writing this, I've been using the StovePaw for 2 years in row, and it still looks like new. It unfolds and clips to the stove legs quite firmly, so the stove itself becomes very rigid.

The StovePaw greatly improves the user experience with the stove in challenging conditions:

  1. The stove becomes more stable on uneven ground.
  2. The stove doesn't sink [unevenly] into snow, when it starts melting after prolonged operation.
  3. The stove doesn't sink into sand or other loose surface under its weight.
  4. In established campsites you won't cause heat damage to the surface (wooden table, groomed grass etc). The same applies to some degree to cooking inside the tent (warning: fire and CO hazard!).
  5. If cooking on a dry/flammable surface there's less risk of fire.

You cannot make it more compact than that!

The only disadvantages I found so far are some residual bulkiness in folded state (it could benefit from more well-thought shape) and lack of storage sack. Those are quite minor, so I'm very satisfied overall!
