rated 5.0 of 5 stars
photo: Pathfinder Stainless Steel 25 oz Cup & Lid Set cup/mug

Versatile and hardwearing cup for drinks and boiling water for rehydrating food. Includes a snap on lid and batwing handles. Equally at home on an open fire or gas burner. If looked after, it will last a life time.

Pros

  • Solid durable construction
  • Generous size for solo trips
  • lid snaps into place
  • holes for a bail handle

Cons

  • Heavier than titanium or aluminium

I have a few Pathfinder items, this is the last of them for review. I have a variety of cups for different purposes but this one is quickly becoming my favourite as it is more versatile than my Vargo Ti or MSR Titan as it can be used more effectively on an open fire.

The cup has a generous 25oz capacity, so plenty of water can be boiled for one person for a brew, cook dried food or to rehydrate a meal. The bat wing handles are a generous size and the lid snaps into place, a feature that I really like as this lessens the possibility of spillages. It also has small holes punched out for straining liquid so boiling pasta or rice is possible if cooking for one person. There are holes at the top of the cup so a bail handle can be fitted and the cup be suspended on an open fire. It can also be left in hot coals without the worry of the metal warping thanks to its steel construction. I have a bottle hanger for this purpose as it can be stored inside the cup when not in use. I have  used it on gas and it works equally well in this instance as well as on top of a wood burning stove. Finally, it has the advantage of being the perfect fit for a Firebox when used with the cup attachment for really efficient boiling with wood as a fuel source.

Compared to Titanium, it is a good deal heavier but at a fraction of the price this does not concern me in the slightest as steel has good thermal properties and it is built to last. I would not use it for fast and lightweight trips in any case, it is more for use around camp or short trips.

Over all, this is a excellent cup which will please all but the most hard-core of minimalists. For bush craft, camping, hiking and general outdoors activities that require a dependable cup that can even double up as a small cooking pot, this is ideal. Spare a thought for the designer, the legendary outdoorsman Dave Canterbury. He suffered a life changing house fire a short while ago and he could really do with some support. He has given so much to the outdoors world, the cup is excellent value for money and you will be supporting a true gentleman.
