Maybe the perfect cold-weather midlayer.

Pros

  • Wool regulates body temp perfectly

Cons

  • Cost
  • Under produced/ hard to find

This Piz Boe regulates my body temp better than any other Pertex shelled (windproof shell) I own. Obviously the stretchy, soft shelled midlayers are not in this category. This is windproof, and it has a stretchy merino wool soft shell material on the shoulder blades which really gives you ample freedom for movement and it helps dump heat. This is surprisingly good for high-output ascents in cold weather.

It doesn't stink either, I've worked the hell outta it and have only needed to touch it up here and there. The wrists are stretchy so you can't feel them at all under a hardshell. This is great under a shell in very cold weather and works well by itself when it's above freezing. The harness compatible pockets also work as vent zips to dump heat. The hood fits well and has the stretch to accommodate over a helmet.

Great mountain midlayer.
