Version reviewed: A5 & A6

Lightweight and waterproof food grade storage.

Pros

  • Clear
  • Lightweight
  • Food grade plastic

Cons

  • None as yet

OK, I have just bought two A6 and two A5 Ortlieb snack packs. The two A6 (passport size) are for storing fresh loose leaf tea and the other one is for storing fresh coffee.

These Ortlieb snack packs are food grade plastic. They look the same as the Ortlieb map case. They have the same roll top velcro fastening and black and silver cord, which if you don't wear it around your neck you can take it off and save about 6 grams.

Which brings me to the weight. The A5 size with cord attached is about 39 grams, so deduct 6 or 7 grams for removing the cord.

This first photo shows the Ortlieb snack pack. A5 velcro roll top opening/closing. See, it's the same as the map case that they make.

You can squeeze the air out by just folding then sealing. These appear to be really quite strong and flexible and as Ortlieb states they are food grade.

I am really pleased with these. I am tired of buying ziplock bags and doubling them up, then worrying if they're going to leak all over the inside of my rucksack. These solve the problem. Although they are heavier than a ziplock bag they have a 5-year warranty!

The point if you are using a small rucksack, say the Terra Nova Laser 35, with the attachment points on the outside, you could strap all your food to the outside of the pack freeing up space inside.

I bought these as I have had the Ortlieb map case for at least 10 years. It is still going strong and it is a lot stronger than it looks, the same is for these snack packs!

As a final note, I must say although Loksak and Opsak bags are lighter, the Ortlieb Snack Pack is far superior  and more robust!
