Optimus Fuel Bottle

photo: Optimus Fuel Bottle fuel bottle

Bottle looked great, loved the "Skittles" green color. This bottle had the newer "child proof" cap that was designed to not come loose without operator input.

The system utilizes a uni-directional ratchet that requires downward pressure to engage the 6 teeth/lugs. Simple enough.

Filled her with Coleman brand fuel for use with my Svea 123R stove (this was from a brand new container of Coleman brand white gas purchased from K-Mart). Within 3 days, the seal on the cap perimeter was moist, and had become slightly translucent. I pulled the cap and observed that the fuel had attacked the off-white colored seal, and it was swelled and distorted.

I pressed on the portion within the cap, and the seal had liquified enough so that it came right out/apart. I got on the internet and tracked down a simple single o-ring cap, and placed my order. I had to fix a brand new product due to faulty material and design. The main o-ring retention is done via a molded internal "plate" that has clear access to outside the bottle if the "plate" is damaged, shifted, or attacked by the fuel. As an engineer myself, this design looked CAD Monkey, great on paper, worthless in the real world.

It's a fuel bottle with a screw on cap, foolproof since the dawn of time..............and somehow they screwed it up. Anyway, no more fancy-pants caps for me, I will do it Army style and run tape on a single o-ring style cap.

Gave it 2 stars, as the bottle itself (aluminum, manufactured in Spain) is of nice quality. I would just stick to the tried and true caps, fuel all over your gear is no fun.
