Ontario Knife Company RAT II
This is a great affordable knife. It’s great for EDC or taking with you outdoors. It can take a beating and is easy to resharpen.
Pros
- It’s affordable.
- The G-10 handles gives the knife a comfortable texture.
- Very easy to resharpen.
Cons
- Steel dulls quickly and is very susceptible to chipping.
I've had this knife for five years now. I’ve taken it everywhere. I EDC it, I take it hiking, I take it camping. It’s been everywhere. With that said it’s seen a lot.
With light duty tasks it never fails to do its job. It cuts tape and cardboard and packaging easily. It starts to struggle when it’s put up against some moderate duty tasks though. For example, I was camping for a whole week and decided to whittle. While whittling, I realized my blade had chipped! I was shocked. I didn’t think the knife steel would do that. Fortunately I packed a field sharpener and put a satisfactory edge back on the blade with ease so I could continue my trip with a functioning blade.
With that experience I learned that 1: the steel is soft and 2: it dulls quickly but sharpens quickly as well. So if you purchase this knife, you just gotta keep on it and maintain that edge regularl.
