Ocean Kayak Malibu Two
Great budget family kayak. Very stable, easily configured for two person with space for gear, or single person. Not the most comfortable kayak, but still good for an afternoon on a lake or river.
Pros
- Stability
- Hauls everyone and the kitchen sink too!
Cons
- Heavy
- Difficult to mount on car rack
I've bought two of these kayaks for my family of four. My two sons can hop on and take the kayak out on the lake with no issues, or the entire family can split between the two yaks and go for an afternoon paddle on the local river.
These are big bulky kayaks that tend to not fit too great on those J hooks for your car roof, but once you've got them up there and cinched down they will do fine. They do not come with anything so keep that in mind when purchasing. You need to add in seats and paddles. I bought the upgraded seat and it is pretty good, but it is still not as comfortable as sitting "inside" a kayak.
Once on the water the kayak tracks well and isn't hard to paddle at all. The only complaint I have is the foot wells tend to fill with water, they have drains built in but as you paddle the water gets forced in and sort of fills the foot wells. I intend to purchase drain plugs at a later date.
The cargo area in the front and back is oddly shaped and really can't serve much purpose, especially since the manufacturer chose to use thick black web straps as hold downs. They are woefully short and can't be used to secure much. The center of the kayak (behind the front seat) is fairly flat and works fine for storage but I had to rig a better tie down system using a bungee.
In all my years of using these kayaks they have proven stable, and safe for the entire family. They are not high end performance kayaks by any means but they do work well for a family outing.
