Northwest Territory Big Timber
The Big Timber has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best tents and shelters for 2024.
Great space. I have had 4 men and a boy comfortably fit in this tent without crowding. Also was in some pretty hard rains with no leaking. Not really available since it has been discontinued, but it was definitely a great tent and the envy of many of my group outings.
Pros
- No tie downs to trip over.
- Lots of screening, so excellent air flow and full coverage with the fly on.
- They need to re-invent, this tent. Everyone tries to compare their tent to mine in size and features.
- 4 doors make accessibility great even when all doors aren't used.
Cons
- The floor doesn't wrap up the sides.
- The carry bag didn't last long.
- A bit bulky to carry, but the space makes up for carry.
The Northwest Territories Big Timber tent is a fantastic tent. It is a tri-section tent with three doors instead of the standard two opening tent. Beside the three doors the main body has a larger door that serves as the main door complete with a small awning.
Each of three the sections has a zippered, screen door with a zip up window and room divider. I often use one section for changing and storage. With the abundance of doors there are more options for orienting the tent in relation to available camp space.
Unable to find another tent with the flexibility of this tent. Pray that it lasts forever, but I have been keeping my eye open for the upgrade in case the day comes that I have to replace my first.

For what I have-a big family, I purchased the K-Mart "vacation home" tent, which is very similar to the "Big Timber". I damaged 1 or 2 of the plastic connectors last year, but was able to repair with duct tape and have used it since.
I called North Pole (who manufactures for many companies under different named products). I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THEY HAVE EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND SINCE THEY NO LONGER MAKE MY MODEL, THEY OFFERED TO SEND ME THE LATEST MODEL (BIG TIMBER) FOR $39.99, AND THAT INCLUDES SHIPPING. Now one could conclude that they could replace it for free however for them to offer that low of a price and free shipping 1/2 way across the country, I will be doing several things:
1) buying their products in the future (I believe in supporting companies who provide good customer service)
2) be more careful setting up/taking down my new tent.
I will say that with all the choices out there, finding a descent company to work with is hard, but as a family man I don't believe you will find a better tent company to deal with!

Very large family tent. We've had this tent for over 15 years. Very reliable, strong tent.
Pros
- Three privacy curtains for the small rooms
- You can stand up in the center
- Lots of windows—good air flow.
Cons
- Difficult to assemble alone. 2 or 3 people work best.
Last year, on a beach, a rogue wave flooded about 100 tents. Most got collapsed and ruined. Our NTBT was flooded and filled with over a hundred pounds of sand and hundreds of gallons of sea water. Everything was soaked but the tent stayed up and was fine.
The layout of the tent allows for breezes to flow through. Nice and airy. The shape is unusual and is very distinct. You do not mix it up with others.Â
It is much easier to pitch with at least two people. Threading the poles through the sleeves takes a little patience.

The tent was alright but if you ever want to get replacement parts for it you'll never get them. Personally I will never buy a product from Northwest Territory again. When you call to get replacement parts and they say, "sorry this product's been discontinued," it irritates you, especially when you pay so much for it.
