Nalgene 38oz Wide Mouth Steel Backpacker
A rugged water container that can be used on a fire to heat water as well as carry it. Though quite heavy this container will stand up to all kinds of abuse.
Pros
- Construction
- Wide neck
- Capacity
- Can be used as a pot to heat water
Cons
- Heavy
- Lid can be fiddly
This stainless steel water container has a capacity of 38oz/1L and is made with 316 stainless steel. It has a lid with a loop attached to the neck so it is less likely to get dropped and lost.
The bottle has a generous 1l capacity which is more than adequate for my needs. The advantage of making a water bottle with stainless steel is that unlike a plastic bottle, you can put it on a flame to heat water. I use a bottle hanger to suspend the bottle over a fire and this works well. Just remember to remove the lid first! Being made of stainless steel it is pretty much indestructible. You'd have to drive over it with a tank to leave any kind of mark on it.
The disadvantage of using steel is the weight. I use this for bush crafting trips where I am not doing so many miles. For longer hikes I prefer lighter plastic bottles. The loop attached to the lid can be fiddly. It has a tendency to get wrapped around the thread and water leaks out. This has happened a couple of times and the first I know about it is a wet back and trousers. By the time I have sorted the problem, half the water I put in it was gone, which is frustrating.
Over all, this is a great bottle for general activities outdoors where putting in the miles is not a priority. The advantage of being able to use it on a flame and its ruggedness make it a great choice, though there are lighter bottles out there (including many made by Nalgene!) which are lighter if you have other means of heating water.
Background
This is my general purpose water bottle for bush crafting trips in woodland in the South of England and short hikes.

I retunned my new aluminum Sigg and got the SS Nalgene backpacker and I'm truly happy and don't have to worry about any liner chemicals. I like the wide mouth and attached lid is key. The only thing is the treads on the outside take time to get use to. Great deal and cheaper than the rest. Maybe think about offering skins with cool graphics?
