A good moderate hiker, but...
Pros
- Nice looking
- Moderate support
- Waterproof
- Comfortable out of box (for me)
Cons
- Pricey
- Not enough ankle support for a backpacker IMO
A nice shoe for easy to moderate trails and dirt/gravel roads; shorter treks of 5 miles or less. Merrell rates it as 'backpacking grade' but I'd classify it as a midweight hiker.
Has moderate ankle support. Over the past year I've had a couple sprains in one ankle and really feel I need more support now. Also, on the descent, I have 'princess and the pea' syndrome with these shoes; I can feel every stone and root I step on. I'm 52 with touches of tendonitis and arthritis in my feet and ankles.
I'm hiking tougher/longer trails now then I purchased 2 years ago. These just aren't backpackers in my mind. Good simple hiker though, but I think $150 is pretty pricey for a simple hiker. They have lasted well however, so from that standpoint ...
