Kershaw Responder
The Responder has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best fixed-blade knives for 2024.
Great knife that you can attach to a PFD or backpack to have ready when needed.
Pros
- Sharp, has both serrated and straight cutting
- sections
- Hard plastic sheath holds the knife on a PFD or backpack.
- Rubber handle has great grip even when wet.
Cons
- Discontinued, only available on sites like eBay,
- which makes them tough to find and expensive.
I was looking for a rescue knife to attach to my PFD when kayaking and sailing. An internet search turned up this knife which has unfortunately been discontinued. I found the yellow-handled version on eBay and bought it, been using it for several years, always performs well.
I came across the black handled version shortly there after. Did not need another, but could not pass it up. Now I have one hanging off my day pack as well. The plastic sheath holds the knife securely in place, but it's ready to go when needed. It will cut through almost anything (within reason).
The one I have on my PFD has a hole for a lanyard, which I have attached in case I drop it while over/in water. There is also a pin to break glass if needed (wish it was on both versions). This is now my regular carry gear whether hiking, or on the water. If you can find one on the used market, by all means grab it, you will not be disappointed!
