Katadyn Drip Gravidyn
This was the best investment we could have made. Lived in Africa for two years and all the tried and true missionaries said "get the Gravidyn Katadyn water filter." They had used theirs for six years. The water tastes perfect—and we had nasty muddy water.
We have even purchased one now to use in the States. No chlorine taste in my water and when the Tavares City has a "don't" drink the water—we had a sewage spill in to the system—we are fine.
Do not leave home without it.
Price Paid: $239
The Gold Standard.
Pros
- Absolutely stellar tasting water
Cons
- Better not be in a hurry
Okay, obviously this isn't something to be carried on the trail—with the possible exception of a large group hike. For base camp, car camping, cabins, remote outposts it cannot be beat.
The instructions must be read carefully. The units that incorporate activated charcoal internally of the ceramic have a "6 Month" lifespan. This is only a factor for continuous use. If the elements are cleaned and dried then their lifespan is practically unlimited, on the order of several thousand gallons.
When filling the unit allow for an overnight timespan for a complete fill. Upon first use I thought maybe 3 or 4 hours would be enough time. It is slow. Make allowances.
Background
Chiefly from high mesa desert slickrock potholes—seasonal rainfall.
