Cavernous and durable make them the best for bike packing/touring.

Pros

  • They'll swallow all gear and more
  • Heavy Cordura with urethane coating inside
  • Extendable storm sleeve near doubles volume
  • The lid holds plenty to be readily at hand and raises or lowers with load
  • Plenty of straps to secure the load.
  • Very high quality
  • Made in Santa Barbara, U.S.A.
  • They're still around when my ortliebs are long gone

Cons

  • They're pricey, but there are deals I've found

I found a new pair of the Large Mountain on closeout for $110 in Eugene, Ore., and I snatched them up first. I used them daily and for bike touring and a year later found an ad on CL for the Expedition for $60. Other than being a bit dusty they appeared unused without any signs of wear.

I know that the Large bags were not designed for the front, but now I had to try them out on the front rack with the Expedition bags on the rear for a moth long tour in Oregon. It worked best mounting them in a lower position and loading a few heavier items in the bottom on axis, then just filling in with bulky lighter gear; mainly clothing or a loaf of bread.

Balance is key to packing panniers and in my experience more critical than weight, especially on the front. Well done, the bike is more stable than without a load. Below is a pic of the Expedition bags and their specs. They have even more volume and with the right pockets to organize my gear. I don't miss the flimsy roll top Ortliebs, in fact neither will you.

Mountain Expedition Pannier Specifications:

  • Volume: 6800/9950 ci 112/163 ltr (pair)
  • Dimensions: 16 x 14.5 x 6.5 (in) 41 x 37 x 17 (cm) (per side)
  • Storm Sleeve: 10.5 in/ 27 cm
  • Weight: 106.9 oz/ 3.03 kg
  • Material: Dupont Cordura
  • Price: $375

They come in colors. All mine are black. Though not described as waterproof I've seldom found anything wet inside after a rain ride. Still I found two pairs of rain covers on sale in Eugene for under $30 and I've got a $600+ set of bags for $170, that will probably outlast me.

The deals are out there for those who need enough to hunt, but if you've got more money than time, they're worth the retail price. Personally, I have very little money and plenty of time, so I have to hunt. Bike God/Goddess blesses those in need that need to ride their bike and do. Keep on spinnin' off to infinity.
