I am using my iPhone for more and more of my photography and video work. Much of that work takes place around water, in hazardous places, or crowded environments.
Over the last couple of years, I have lost several clip-on lenses while working in heavy brush or in crowds of people and the possibilities of dropping the phone in the water or getting it wet are endless.
I recently discovered the cellphone cases made by a Canadian company called Hitcase. Hitcase makes several waterproof and impact-resistant cases that can be paired with the company's TrueLUX magnetic/screw-on mount lenses.
The top of Hitcase's product line is the PRO. It has an IP68 waterproof rating up to 33ft/10m and its drop impact protection is rated at 16ft/5m. More importantly, the PRO case utilizes the screw-on feature of the TrueLUX lenses. All of Hitcase's other cases use the magnetic mount.
I've been using the Hitcase PRO for a couple of weeks and the screw-on lens/case connection is proving to be solid and reliable. Half a rotation secures the lens, in place, and there is no need to take extra time and effort to align the TrueLUX lens with the camera's lens. This has always been an issue with clip-on lenses and many clip-on lenses will not align properly when any protective case is used.
Installing your cellphone into the case is a snap and does not require tools. Just place the phone into the case and snap the screen cover/protector into place. It's kind of like closing a Rubbermaid container. Seal it all the way around and it's ready to go. To remove the phone, peel the cover away just like it was the top of a Rubbermaid container.
The optional Truelux lenses are made from optical grade glass and are waterproof and shockproof. There are three lenses available; Macro, Wide, and Super Wide. They are available separately or as a complete kit.
The Hitcase PRO comes equipped with a mounted rail for the company's Railslide Mounting System, which is compatible with the optional Railslide accessories and GoPro mounting accessories. If you desire to use more traditional mounting accessories designed for cellphones, the Railslide mount can be removed without affecting the waterproof integrity of the PRO case.
Background
I have only been using the Hitcase PRO and TrueLUX lenses for several weeks and already it has become obvious, to me, that the PRO case provides superior shock and water protection. I am confident that the TrueLUX thread-on lenses are secured to the case and won't be knocked out of alignment with the camera lens or lost.
The waterproof design of the PRO case utilizes small mechanical buttons for the volume and power functions as well as a small knurled knob that controls the sound on/off function. The volume and power buttons are easy to locate, by touch, and easy to push. However, this may not be the case when wearing gloves. The knurled knob works smoothly but requires a firm grip and might be a problem to persons with tender or sensitive fingers.
