Helle Temagami
The Helle Temagami is a well made knife with a laminated blade that has stood up to years of use and abuse. It has curly birch handles and a scandi grind making it well suited to bushcraft and camp activities.
Pros
- It fills out your hand very well preventing foward and backward slips.
- The laminated blade allows the knife to hold a sharp edge for a long time.
- The hidden tang where your fingers are help keep your hand warm in cold temperatures.
Cons
- It takes a long time to sharpen.
- Due to the hardness of the center steel the blade is susceptible to small chips.
- The leather sheath becomes loose over time.
My experience with the Helle Temagami has been all round good, it has been my primary knife on many backpacking and bushcraft trips, and I have always been able to trust that it will get the job done.
It is great at hacking away and branches, building shelters, preparing fire and even carving, it makes a great EDC if your in the outdoors a lot. To put it to the test I made a bloody good bow that I caught dinner with and then prepared the meat with the Temagami, it slice through the meat well enough to make a good stew with little waste.
However it does have some pretty big issues that may make you want to consider a different knife. Due to the hardness of the blade and maybe a poor heat treat there is an area on the knife that is susceptible to small chips, I have had to sharpen back the edge multiple time, it's never caused any problems in the feild but is annoying. The sheath while beautiful has come loose over time to the point where a small shake while the knife is upside-down will result in it falling out, but that has never caused any problems for me as I'm rarely upside-down with my knife on me.
In conclusion it is a reliable, beautiful knife that holds a great edge and will easily last long enough to be passed down to future generations but my one did have a few issues with chipping on the blade.
