Helle GT
An excellent hunting/canoe camp knife. Very high quality and partially hand made in Norway.
Pros
- Laminated stainless steel blade
- Birchwood burl handle
- Good size for butchering game
- Top quality full grain leather sheath
- Knife and sheath are beautifully made
Cons
- Could use a pommel on the end of the handle
My wife bought me the HELLE GT sheath knife for my birthday at the Fjallraven Store in Boulder, Colorado, this spring. The stainless steel laminated blade is its most outstanding feature as this creates a hard steel core for long lasting sharpness surrounded by resilient steel to give the core strength.
While "heavy" at 7.3 oz. for a backpacking knife for the purposes I've listed above it is very well suited. My backpacking knife is a tiny Gerber folding lock blade, so tiny I had to add a braided reflective lanyard to it to prevent accidental loss.
The "Pros" lists the best features above, but one must hold this knife to understand the quality. Other HELLE knife owners I've communicated with on the Long Range Hunting Magazine forum love their knives too.
HELLE knives are made in a small factory right on the southwest coast of Norway. Go to YouTube and search for HELLE knives factory and you will find Les Stroud, the Canadian star of Survivorman, doing a tour.
This knife kinda rounds out my "Wood Crafter" tool set as I also have a camp axe by Council Tool of North Carolina. It's the "Wood-Craft" 19" handle axe.

Background
This knife is EXTREMELY sharp and due to its laminated blade with the hard steel core/edge it stays sharp for a long time when butchering game.
