Granite Gear Stratus Access 5200
The Stratus Access 5200 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best expedition packs for 2024.
It's 2008, and I wrote the other review of this pack in 2002 (Mike B). I have an update on this pack. I am still very pleased with this pack. The only problem, and it really doesn't bother me too much, is the green color is starting to fade on the edges.
Other than that, this pack continues to kick-@ss. I have hauled traditional gear and chain saws with gas cans. I haven't found a way not to carry anything with the available buckles, loops and straps. I love the way you can close the main flap with the buckles and then easily zip it up, with the oversized zippers. I can quickly find anything in my pack, with the top and side load design. I only wish the interior was yellow, or bright colored for better visibility. The large side pockets are great for quick access of fuel containers and water filters.
The pack is not the traditional round shaped pack. It is shaped rectangular to keep the weight close to your back. If this pack fails me, I will write another review.

I have used this pack on several weeklong backpacking trips to the Shenandoah National Park, and I think it is a great pack. The two large side pockets are the perfect size for a Katadyn Combi and a 33 fluid ounce fuel bottle. This pack is loadable from the top and front, and this makes even the bottom items easily accessible. It has been put through some moderate abuse and has held up well. If pack convenience and accessibility is important to you, compare this pack.
