Fjallraven Kajka 35

rated 4.5 of 5 stars
photo: Fjallraven Kajka 35 overnight pack (35-49l)
Version reviewed: Kajka 35 M/L

I needed a smaller, tough Fjallraven backpack than my (then) smallest Fjallraven the Keb 52L. This Kajka 35 M/L is now my go-to day pack.

Pros

  • Comfortable, broad shoulder straps
  • Can attach Sea to Summit shoulder clips for camera attachment
  • Extremely comfortable hip belt
  • Can order added side or front "pockets"(4L)
  • Front can be completely unzipped for access, like all Kajkas.

Cons

  • One hip belt pocket—would have liked two

This is a relatively new addition to the Fjallraven Kajka line of backpacks. This is the newest and the smallest. It comes in two sizes both labelled as 35L, but I suspect the S/M is 35L while the M/L is closer to 40L?

Choose your size carefully because although I could wear the S/M version with the easy back adjustment lengthened, the M/L fits me better and importantly has wider more comfortable shoulder straps. This is important for me because I attach my Canon R7 mirrorless camera and bag to my shoulder straps using Sea to Summit male/female clips, carabiners, and short straps. [I detailed this in my review of the Fjallraven Keb 52.] For lots of smaller packs by other manufacturers this is not possible because the shoulder straps are too flimsy and thin.

Like all Kajkas, the  hip belt is extremely comfortable. However it has only one hip belt pocket (right side). On the left there is only a sturdy gear attachment loop. I would have preferred two hip pockets—left and right. Fjallraven does provide 4L attachment "pockets" that can be attached to either the front or the sides. I have one attached to the front. These can easily be unclipped if not needed.

The front can be completely unzipped for access, like all Kajkas. This provides fast complete access to the entire contents of the main pack compartment. The inner compartment has an unzipped internal sub-compartment for water/caps etc. The lid has three zippered pockets: two on top and one under, with a key attachment clip. The pack is supplied with its own rain cover so that cover is perfectly matched to the pack size.

Like all Fjallraven packs the outer material is very tough (for the prickly Australian bush!) and the pack is supported by two birch wood stays—not metal stays.

The pack is what I would call "full featured".

Background

I have used this pack almost every day since I bought it three months ago. I hike basically everyday since I am retired.
