Eddie Bauer Accelerant Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars
photo: Eddie Bauer Accelerant Jacket synthetic insulated jacket

This jacket is a very versatile layer for the outdoor enthusiast. It is breathable, wind resistant, comfortable, and surprisingly warm for the weight. It can be used year round for climbing, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, or any high output activity where a breathable outer shell is needed.

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Wind resistant
  • Warm
  • Comfortable
  • Zippered pockets

Cons

  • Not very waterproof

I've owned this jacket for about a year and already it is my favourite go-to jacket. The fit is close enough to use it as a mid layer for the colder days yet loose enough to use as an outer shell.

There seems to be a little too much material in the armpits. Probably because it is made for climbing. At first I found this a little uncomfortable with some layers, but I have gotten use to it and it doesn't bother me anymore. Overall it is very comfortable and has plenty of stretch for any activity.

The DWR treated nylon shell protects the core and arms from the elements and the fleece side panels provide plenty of venting for the high output activities. I like the roomy zippered pockets and the helmet friendly fleece hood. The long cuffs and thumb holes are nice for those cooler winter days. This jacket is very light at about 14 oz. and at first glance you wouldn't think that it would provide much warmth, but the Primaloft insulation does an admirable job keeping the core warm.

I usually wear it over a base layer and lightweight smart wool or fleece layer in on my winter hikes and it is more than sufficient as a winter shell on all but the coldest days. I use this jacket for my fall mountain biking days because it is breathable enough for the climbs and is still able to cut the wind on the downhill sections.

I do get a little wind coming through on underside of the arms where the nylon gives way to the fleece sections, but it only bothers me on the cold days when I'm barreling down hill on my bike. I love the attached fleece hoody for these rides because I can wear it under my helmet.

I haven't worn it in any downpours, but it sheds light rain and snow very well. I'm also impressed with the quality of the jacket. I've only had it for a year, but it's had a lot of use and so far hasn't shown any signs of wear.

In short the jacket is ideal for most outdoor activities from hiking and climbing to skiing and mnt. biking. It is holding up well and I hope to get many years of use from this product. I like it so much that I'm thinking of getting another just in case it becomes discontinued when this one finally does wear out.
