CRKT Edgie II
The Edgie II has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best knives and tools for 2024.
The Edgie II is a self-sharpening folding knife that retains an incredibly sharp edge due to integrated sharpeners inside the handle. I carried this knife clipped into the front pocket of my jeans for several days before I caught the clip on a door frame, causing the clip to break off. Fortunately the clip is attached with screws, so it can be replaced easily.
The CRKT website has a page where you can order replacement parts at no charge, shipped free, no questions asked. However, after placing the order I received an email saying the replacement clip is backordered. It's been a couple weeks now with no further word from CRKT. I guess it's still on backorder.
Incidentally, before I found the page to order replacement parts, I emailed customer service to ask about ordering a replacement clip. A service rep responded and, instead of directing me to their website, asked what part I needed and offered to get the part ordered for me. That's good service, IMO.
As for the knife itself, the self-sharpening mechanism works well, keeping a razor edge on the blade at all times. A strange thing about this knife is the lever that unlocks the blade. The way it is designed, the blade could become unlocked while using it. The instructions for the knife fully acknowledge this possibility.
Another gripe is that even though the blade has a cut-out portion that seems designed for one-handed opening, I found it difficult to open the knife with only one hand. To its credit, the Edgie II felt very solid in terms of materials and construction. It also felt well balanced, with an even distribution of weight between the open blade and the handle.
Minus one star for a couple of design points. Four stars for solid build and performance and self-sharpening feature.
