Coleman Peak 1 Aries

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Peak 1 Aries has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

One of the best tents ever. Truly free standing, easy to work with, small size when packed.

Pros

  • Durability
  • Fits horizontally in pack with stakes and poles
  • Easy to put up and take down
  • Truly free standing — does not need to be staked in
  • Roomy

Cons

  • No longer made
  • No similar models made

Having owned several tents and done more than my share of backpacking, this tent served me best. The fact that is a true free standing dome is a plus. These tents can be put up on ground too rough for staking in and easily moved without taking down.

Trade vestibule for free standing? Any day! I've needed the ability to have a free standing tent lots more than any vestibule. I'll take the true free stander that can be put up anywhere with or without stakes. This particular design integrates the rainfly into the same grommets that hold the poles so it still is a free stander with the fly attached.

Durability has been excellent. It's been left out in the sun, rain, in Texas for long periods and is still functional.

The whole shootin match rolls into a size small enough to fit sideways in many packs due to use of shorter pole sections. Makes for easier packing. I've even rolled a cut-to-size ground cloth around the unit and am still able to comfortably lay it down in the bottom of my pack.

Its D-shaped door feels more comfortable if I'm using a left handed sleeping bag. That's a personal preference.

These are nearly impossible to find now as Coleman discontinued the line. This was senseless.  Why discontinue what worked best and replace it with new, marginal, expensive, difficult to use, equipment.  Nobody makes anything similar these days.

This tent stood up to the needs of the Boy Scouts — What more do you need to say it was a good model!?

True freestanding dome
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: Excellent
Source: bought it new
Price Paid: $90

It's a great tent for backpacking, compact and at 5lbs 3oz pretty light. Long enough for tall people to not get their feet wet when it rains cause they're touching the tent wall, but not quite wide enough for two people plus their backpacks. And there's no vestibule for gear storage.

I wished the fly was designed somewhat differently. It's not easy to position the tent against heavy winds and rain with the fly coming down all the way on the two opposing sides. But it's rated to be a three -season tent after all and considering the price it's definitely recommendable.

Design: three season freesstanding dome

Ease of Setup: easy

I love this tent. Set up is easy, and it's plenty roomy enough with its 32 square feet of floor space and rectangular shape.

Condensation is not a problem with this tent. One time when I brought in wet gear and pitched it and camped in the rain on the ocean beach and kept the window and door totally zipped up I did get condensation, but that is to be expected under those conditions.

Its packed size is very small and I really like that.

Design: Free standing
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: Very Easy
