Coleman Northstar 8

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

The Northstar 8 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

Two people setup, easy directions, huge.

Pros

  • Easy setup
  • Large capacity and sturdy frame
  • Especially like the built in floor, awning, and rain fly additions
  • One stop camping tent
  • Great 2 to 8 people, but could accommodate 10 if necessary.

Pretty quick setup. Everything in the storage case. Suggest adding a hammer to the storage case. The awning is a part of the rain fly. Initially, you'll need two people for faster setup and one person reading directions. Assembly is simple.

Do not use with cots or shoes. The floor is not sturdy enough for cots or hard soled footwear.

Background

New to tent camping.

This was one of the best wet, rainy, windy camping trips I have ever gone on due to this tent. The winds were gusting to over 55 mph and it was raining cats and dogs. Over 4.7 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. Several of the people in 2-person tents did pretty well but the dome tents with fiberglass poles just flattened out or collaped with the wind and everything including the people in it got wet. We ended up with 10 people in our tent and it was a little cramped but everyone slept dry.

I was going to buy the Eureka Titan like my friends have, but glad I didn't as it did not do as well in the heavy rain as leaks developed during the night mainly due to the blowing rain. We set the tent up where the wind ended up hitting the tent mainly from the side and I was worried that it would fail but it made it through the night. The next day we rotated it so the wind would hit it from the end. The rain quit but the wind did blow that night. The tent was very stable and did not move around at all.

For a large tent, this one is a real winner. I would never have chosen a Coleman period at this price but it ended up being worth every penny. (since my first two choices were out of stock), I was going to return this tent at the end of our 5 day trip and buy the Eureka. Not any more, I'll keep the Coleman.

Nice tent, roomy. Fly is full and nice and tight, plenty of adjusters. We camp on the beach at Montauk in the fall a true test for tents. This tent held up in 40 mph winds which is a good test. Stayed very dry and not much wind whip because of frame and shape.

Zippers are not for kids, only drawback and it's discontinued, I guess the price? I have had 12 tents. This one's the best.

Price Paid: $399

Unbelievable quality, features and materials. Fantastic flexibility on set-up not found in any other tent on the market. Get one while you still can. If you want a Cadilac get another tent... this is the Bentley.
