photo: Clif Mojo Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt nutrition bar

Tasty energy on the go. Great for a fast snack that won't slow you down. Lots of fat calories to give the belly a break from heavy carb loads. This variety is more heat sensitive than others so not advised for hot weather trips.

Pros

  • Delicious
  • Low glycemic
  • Over half the calories are from fat

Cons

  • Chocolate is too melty
  • Sort of small in volume
  • Can be messy

Far different from the standard Clif Bar the Mojo Trail Mix line of bars are something to eat because you want to, not because you need to. All of the flavors I have tried so far have been a delicious way of adding some variety to my on trail diet.

The Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt flavor, like the others in the Mojo line, gets a lot of its calories from fat. Trying to keep up with energy needs on trail with carb heavy bars often takes a toll on my digestion by the end of a long hard day. I have found that these bars offer a nice energy boost especially towards the end of the day when it can be hard to keep eating.

The mix of chocolate, nuts and sea salt make for a very delicious bar. There is a definite issue with the chocolate Clif chose for this product. It melts at a relatively low temperature. That means that they need to be opened and eaten somewhat carefully to avoid making a mess. This issue is made much worse if the bars are carried in a hip belt where heat and pressure turn them into a still tasty but incredibly messy glob of goo.

Being so tasty I often wish the bar was larger in size, but one of their benefits is that they aren't a heavy snack. At 200 calories the Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt Mojo is a nice way to keep the fuel tank topped off. I can recommend this bar to anyone needing some compact energy on the go, but especially to those looking to add some fat calories to balance out their trail diet.

In making that recommendation I would suggest keeping in mind the melting chocolate issue. This variety is probably best reserved for cooler weather trips and shouldn't be tucked into your pocket.
