I tried, I had hope, the socks catastrophically failed.

Pros

  • pretty colors

Cons

  • useless in every way
  • no reliability
  • no durability

On an evening while the powder piled higher outside my office window, I made the decision to indulge myself. I purchased two pairs of Bridgedale Light Weight Ski Socks from their Merino Performance category. These socks were even endorsed right on the package by the National Ski Patrol!

“They are bound to please,” I thought.

The socks arrived from the wonderful team at Liberty Mountain where I have a pro-deal account. I paid a slightly discounted rate.

When I slid these vibrant blue and red foot-skins over my beat-up-feet my first thought was, “okay, thin, but a good fit.” I didn’t want too much cushion. These would be primarily worn on long twenty-degree Fahrenheit Nordic ski patrols, over roughly ten miles. My boots were easily snugged around the thin technical socks and off I went, skiing from blow down to signage, all the while offering directions to Nordic-skier passersby. I inquired as to the presence of ski passes with a lovely couple from Canada, cut up some fallen limbs that shattered on the lower groomers, then skied back to the Nordic Center for lunch.

I removed my boots to change into my Mukluks and there it was! After ten or so miles, on day one, a hole had formed. My big toe, with its fairly well pedicured nail was poking through! This is a gross disappointment. Day one?! This degree of low quality manufacturing in a sock company as big as Bridgedale is unconscionable. -and asking a $20+ retail price?!

Needless to say, my one, regrettable, embarrassing exploration into sock companies who aren’t Darn Tough Socks was a foolish decision and it won’t happen again.

Background

I have been wearing socks for some time now and despise a footwear letdown of any kind. I hiked across Panama in a single pair of Darn Tough Socks once!
