Black Diamond Speed 22
Great daypack designed for carrying climbing gear. I purchased mine to be used as a summit pack on multi-day trips and on multi-pitch big walls. I would recommend this pack when you want to go fast and light.
Pros
- Removeable hip belt
- Removeable brain lid
- Hydration sleeve
- Rope straps
- Compression straps
Cons
- Tight fit if you are a large person
- Venting could be better
Fit
I have worn this pack with a T-shirt and with my technical ice climbing clothing and the pack was comfortable to wear all day and during climbing vertical pitches of ice and rock.
Comfort
This pack does not vent very well. I would have to believe the BD designers intentionally omitted the a venting system to minimize bulk and weight.
Capacity
I find that I can carry two liters of water in a hydration bag, a pair of climbing shoes, a trad rack of 10 cams (nothing larger than a BD #3), a compact harness, 10 alpine draws, four locking carbiners, belay device, headlamp, lightweight rain jack, food, and some other miscellaneous gear. Rope can be lashed down under the brain lid along with tie down compression straps.
Compression
Loads can be compressed by using the side compression straps.
Ease of Use
Fairly basic pack, simple design, perfect for the alpine.
Construction and Durability
Bombproof construction that you would expect from Black Diamond. I have had mine for over a year and it seems to be hold up well with no signs of wear and tear and it survived the sharp granite of the Grand Teton and the icy granite crags of New Hampshire.
