Berghaus Cyclops III

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

The Cyclops III has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best weekend packs for 2024.

Over the 30 year mark... like to say it still looks good. Has taken a beating!  After all the years, ice climbing, running around, dragging it up behind some places, dragged through the mud in others.... the grey is grey but the blue nylon isn't as blue as before.

I replaced the bottom zipper for one of the big tooth YKK's (origional failed after one too many times stuffing the sleeping bag in the bottom (was designed for a down bag, I have a 29K qualofill bag...not quite the same on compaction - very stuffed in, zipper failed for a reason!).

Still one of the most comfortable packs I have ever used. Has a "soft frame" (closed cell pads inside codura) and stiffening bars to help support the weights associated with a climbing ruck sack.

In warmer weather, the codura against the skin was not an issue.  Used a friend's pack 1 time so they could try out the Berghaus.  Codura on that thing just chewed at skin and wet shirts (one of those where it seems like you need to feed it or someting before each use).  They wound up dumping their old pack and bought a "big brother" to the Cyclops (they desired more weight on their back???? More stuff???)

Off for climbing this winter, will still grab it as part of the usual equip heading out.

Even as a better deal, got it on "closeout sale" at IME or EMS.

If Berghaus quality is still on par... great. If the pack dies before I do, I'll buy its next of kin from Berghaus.

Price Paid: $65 USD approx.
