photo: Bates GX-8 Gore-Tex Side Zip backpacking boot

Best boots I have ever had.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Durable
  • Light
  • Gore-Tex
  • Side zip

Cons

  • No Vibram soles like others

I have to wear higher boots when I hike, due to previous ankle injuries, and a good pair is always so hard to find. Often the higher boots (7+ inches) are winter specific hiking boots and come with insulation, and usually are coupled with a delightful camouflage pattern.

I heard about Bates from a friend of mine while serving an LDS mission, he had brought a pair with him because they were waterproof and had a side zipper. They were perfect at the time for what we were doing, and I was so impressed with how they functioned that when I returned home I bought a pair for my outdoor adventures.

Four years after my original purchase I have finally retired this first pair. They saw me through some rugged terrain, winter hikes, summer backpacking, hunting trips, and in their later years yard work. They have been wonderful boots! Perfect fit, great comfort, relatively easy break-in period, good looks, and durable outer fabrics. I could not be happier with my choice to buy Bates boots, I have never had them fail to perform on any occasion.

I love the easy-on, easy-off side zip feature (which is also lined with Gore-tex) it has made a world of difference while camping, especially for those midnight "tinkles" in the dark. The Gore-tex has never failed me, and the outer leather has held up well to scrapes, bumps, and wear; honestly with a little bit of polish they look like new over and over again. The grip is great, really well lugged! I am sad however that the GX-8 model does not feature Vibram rubber like many of the other models. Great ankle support with a easy lace system to get the pressure you need just right.

This version is also available insulated, which I am sure would do well for that  season! However, even in snow I was never cold. I will be a loyal Bates customer for life now, and I hope that others can find the same happiness that I have.
