Altra Lone Peak 6

rated 3 of 5 stars
photo: Altra Lone Peak 6 trail running shoe

These shoes have a fit and build that are great for all day comfort, on or off trail. "Original Footshape fit" is amazing for wide feet! The extra space may make them unsuitable for fierce competition, though.

Pros

  • Wide toe box
  • Zero drop
  • Gaiter trap
  • Grippy outsole with great traction

Cons

  • I like Salomon's quick tie laces better
  • No studs

Fit: These use Altra's "original footshape fit", which is their roomiest fit. Believe it, or not, they also come in a wide. When I ordered these, they were only available in wide, so that's what I got.

Comfort: The wide toe box is so comfortable. I'm almost always used to having my foot squeezed, especially at the end of a long day. That's a thing of the past with these. I am constantly checking for another deal on these because I definitely want another when these wear out.

Support: Feels great, but I'm used to minimalist shoes, so don't know how they'd feel for someone used to more support.

Water Resistance: N/A

Traction: They've kept me from slipping much on a lot of terrain, though it's common to wear studs in places I've used these. I've slipped a bit going up loose earth climbs, wet rocks, and wet leaves.

Temp Control: N/A

Ease of Use: N/A

Features: Gaiter Trap holds Dirty Girl Gaiters or Altra's Trail Gaiters in place without the need to attach a strip of velcro. There's also a built-in cover to keep debris from sticking to the velcro.

Construction & Durability: They've held up through 80+ miles of on and off trail running so far. A small part of a seam on the toe cap broke, but it's still holding together well.

Conditions:  I've used these in the spring and summer so far, orienteering, trail runs, and hikes, starting March of this year. I've taken them through streams and worn them on a 16+ mile day of runs and hikes. Still happy feet at the end of that day with no blisters!

Background

As a Scoutmaster, geocacher, and orienteer, I find myself in forests at least once a week. These shoes are holding up well in 80+ miles of primarily off trail running.

Comfortable fit, large toe box. Durability is a disaster—within 50km the first tears appear in the upper mesh. After 300km both shoes were worn out, lots of tears. Grip is just ok, not for technical trails.

Pros

  • Zero drop
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Not durable at all, short life
  • Expensive

Fit: Comfortable, big toebox which is sometime a bit floppy

Comfort: Good comfort, till tears appear and stones and debris comes into the show

Support: Zero drop shoe with gooed support

Water Resistance: Average like any other shoe

Traction: Not fantastic, Not good at technical rock, wet rock and leaves/earthy hills

Ease of Use: Laces do come loose now and than, have to check and recheck during running. Gaitors fitted.

Features: Zero drop is ok, Sole has the right balance between stiffness / flexibility

Construction & Durability: Big disappointment. These shoes are not well made and did fall apart within the first 300km on the trail.

Conditions: Tropical mountain running (Indonesia)
