AlpineAire Southwestern Style Masa with Beef

New recipe is much improved.
Pros
- Light weight
- Easy prep
Cons
- Much too much spicy heat
This is a pleasant diversion from the standard freeze-dried backpackers fare, at least in terms of texture. Masa being a corn meal product, it is obviously not a rice-based or pasta dish, and variety on a long trip can be very important.
Beef and beans rehydrated well in the listed time. However, there seemed a little too much liquid left over at the end of even an extra "cooking" period.
And the level of spice. Wow. Neither my partner nor I could really taste anything other than the heat of this dish. The texture was a pleasurable change, but the heat just plain overwhelmed our every experience of the meal. I finished it, because I am always hungry; otherwise a goodly portion would have gone to waste.
Edit 9/19: Had another example of this over the past weekend, and it was MUCH improved, both in terms of overall hydration and reduced spicing. I would now happily recommend it—until the next time they change the recipe?
