AlpineAire Key Lime Chicken
A decent freeze-dried meal — perhaps not wholly satisfying, but it makes a nice change.
Pros
- Light weight
- Decent flavor
- Relatively low salt
Cons
- Very mild flavor
- Not totally accurate cooking instructions
One doesn't expect a flavor explosion from a citrus-based chicken and rice dish, and so this does not surprise. However, there are those days when, after so many faux-mexi meals, a hiker just wants something mild, and a little different. That is what this meal is for.
The key lime flavor is good, but not overwhelming, and the chicken rehydrated sufficiently. The rice, as is usual with freeze-dried rice meals, required a few minutes more time than the package called for.
The only real off moment was the seeming extra liquid in the pouch. Even with an extra three minutes, I would estimate perhaps a third of the water remained. It is possible that this was meant to be more a soup than a meal, but that is not implied on the packaging. This extra liquid did not alter the flavor to any probable extent, but it did leave me feeling somehow slightly dissatisfied. I will say, however, that after a couple days of over-spiced offerings, this was a very pleasant change.
I am not a chef, nor do I produce freeze-dried meals for commercial consumption. However, I would hazard a guess that making this into a creamy, sauced based meal would lift it to four, or perhaps even five, stars.
